The Yellow Brick Road Studio’s camp “Joy of the Journey” is a one-of-a-kind, 5-day camp for women who are ready to dedicate some real time to relax, restore and renew. As women, we work and handle, juggle and manage…and we rock at it, don’t we? Now it is time to add in some true self-care.
At YBR, we believe that all of us have buried gifts inside. Like the characters in The Wizard of Oz, we often think we need outside sources to validate us. We tend to let this happen while we are busy taking care of everyone else. Let’s slow down enough to recognize inspiration, reconnect with our inner creative energy and enjoy the journey.
Each day's experience is expertly designed to touch on each purpose listed above, but in a variety of ways so that every day is unique. Expect fun surprises along the way too!
“Joy of the Journey” is the perfect opportunity for someone wanting to tap back into her creativity, awaken her dormant self, get messy and make connections. Give yourself the gift of time and space to connect with your inner visions and express them in a supportive small-group environment.
THIS YEAR the theme is TRAVEL! We will be making projects inspired by the spirit of adventure and wanderlust. You will get to design and create an entire Tim Holtz Configuration Shadow Box. You will make many mini items to go into the box, including but not limited to a travel journal, a "map of moi" handmade map, clay tinies and a Memory Frame. We will also be coffee-dying paper, altering travel photos, writing poems, making molds and creating c-ART-ography!
You are IN if you are paid!

Virtual: Paper Peace Quilt
This class was recorded live, but is still available to watch! Once you register, you will get an invitation to the private Facebook Group in which the class lives!
Sometimes our country swells with unrest and aches with injustice. Sometimes we feel powerless to help and, in this quarantine, isolated from action. My hope is that art can soothe our weary souls, if only for a time. I believe in the strength of self-expression and in the therapy of creativity.
In this class, we will create a paper quilt. I will take you step by step through very open-ended art prompts and it will be fun to see how different everyone's turns out. Just in that, we are reminded to celebrate differences.
The look and feel of your piece will be determined by the choices you make along the way and the materials you have/use. Please join us, even if you don't have the exact things on the list. I think everyone can make this project.
In the group, you will see a collection of quotes that I've assembled. You can use one of those or bring your own.

Supplies List:
Virtual: Paint-Rip-Collage
(This was recorded live but is still available.)
Your invitation to the private Facebook Group will be sent out to you when you register. There you will find the video!
That's right! We will PAINT paper with watercolors and then RIP the painting into strips and then reassemble it into an awesome COLLAGE!
Then we will add a focal point with rubber stamps (OR any other way you want to do it)
Pull up a glass of SOMETHING and let's (not) get together!
xoxo
Supplies needed:
watercolor paints
a brush
cup of water
paper towels
White craft glue or glue stick
Heat gun (if you have one)
For the focal point, I'll be using:
rubber stamps (any images you like)
black Staz-On ink pad (permanent ink of your color choice)
*********BUT: you do NOT have to do this part and you will still love the class! *******
Virtual: Working with Stencils and Watercolors
This class was recorded live on 2/24/21.
Your invitation to the private Facebook Group will be sent out to you when you register. There you will find the video of your class.
In this class, we used our stencils in a variety of ways. Using them with acrylic paints is probably the most common way I use them. This class is using stencils with watercolors.
Supplies needed:
Watercolor Paper
Watercolor Paint
Paintbrushes
Stencils (some with masks)
Water in cup
Paper Towels
Baby wipes
Virtual:Collage Peek Through
(This was recorded live but is still available.)
Your invitation to the private Facebook Group will be sent out to you when you register. There you will find the video!
So much fun! So many possibilities!
In this class we will play with the concept of positive and negative space. We will first make a background collage. Then we will create a focal point or new pattern with stencils, masks and paint. You will come away with a finished piece of artwork.
Your substrate (base of your piece) can be anything stiff enough to receive collage and paint. Heavyweight papers, cardboard, canvas, wood--anything you like.
Have your paper stash nearby! You are going to want to be able to pull from it to make the collage part. We will need lots of tiny pieces, so using up your scraps is perfect.
Pull up a glass of SOMETHING and let's (not) get together!
xoxo
Supplies needed:
Substrate (see above)
Mod Podge or other gluing medium
Little bowl for your medium
Sponge brush
Paints-craft paint or acrylic
Paintbrush
Water in cup
Stencils and/or masks--bring a lot--we will talk about this when we get to that point......................
If you do not have any, or if you want to try making your own, bring some card-stock
Palette
Heat gun (if you have one)
Virtual: Roll the Dice--Your Painting Will be Nice!
(This was recorded live but is still available.)
Your invitation to the private Facebook Group will be sent out to you when you register. There you will find the video!
That's right! We will be letting the die indicate which step to do next on our abstract painting! Sometimes I'll roll mine and sometimes I'll call on someone in the class to roll theirs.
I'll get us going on the start of an acrylic abstract piece. Then we will roll the dice!
Each number on the die will be associated with a step we can take to continue the painting. Examples include: add some white to a color, add a circle, etc.
Then we will finish out our pieces together.

Optional:

Virtual: The House That Built M
This class was recorded live, but you can still purchase it and follow along. Your invitation to the private Facebook Group will be sent out to you when you register. There you will find the video!
Technically, this is an art journaling project in that we will be doing some brainstorming, thinking, writing notes about a topic and then creating art that will use those ideas.
That being said, you can just do it as a fun and thought-provoking stand-alone project. No need for a journal.
The theme of the class is homes that you have lived in. After the lecture/brainstorming portion of the class, we will be making houses that can stand alone, be attached into an art journal or be made into an accordion style book.
Have lots of mark-making supplies nearby (paints, markers, pens, etc.) and your paper stash (patterned paper, magazines, stickers, etc.) nearby! You are going to want to be able to pull from it to decorate your houses.
You may want to pre-cut your house shapes. Just draw a simple house shape and cut out about 4 from stiff paper.
Also, you may want to bring a list of all of the addresses at which you've ever lived!
